Home Visiting pilot
A hugely promising Home Visiting Pilot launched in April 2018. Three Nurse Practitioners undertake selected home visits at four trial site practices – Wensum Valley, Bacon Road, Castle and Magdalen Medical Practices.
So far we have seen up to 70% reduction in home visits for GPs, who use that time to see more patients, attend to prescription requests etc . Very often, home visits require the skills of nursing staff rather than medical staff, so it often means the patient sees the right clinician first time.
Another really important benefit is that the nurses work across the whole day, rather than the usual afternoon slot allotted for GPs to make home visits, following their normal clinic. This means patients are seen earlier; and if they need to go to hospital, it means the flow of patients to our local hospital is stretched across the day rather than a 'bunching' of arrivals mid-late afternoon. This helps the hospital manage pressures on their Emergency Department.
